Amelia Cox - VIC to Italy

Mon 01 Feb 2010

Amelia Cox, from Warrandyte VIC, is currently in Itally on a 3 month Summer explorer program. She sent us this update:

Ciao Student Exchange Australia,

I know I’ve only been here for almost 3 weeks, but there's already so much to tell!
It didn't hit me that I was in Italy the moment I flew into Milan airport after 2 very long flights. It was just so surreal. After knowing I was going to Italy for so long, I was finally here!!

After catching a bus to Milan station, me and another exchange student, Elise caught a train to Verona, where I was greeted by my host family. I live in an apartment with my host dad, mum, sister and dog. They are all so nice! I don’t have to do any chores but I always help out when I can.

The first couple of days I was pretty home sick. Everything was just so different and being extremely jetlagged didn’t help. Everyday I wakeup at 6, get dressed, have breakfast, then ride my bike to the station to catch a train then walk about 25 minutes to school.

In Australia I get up at 8 and catch a bus at 8.45 and just get to school on time. So school is definitely different. Everyone at school is so nice but, and I'm really thankful for that.

Not going to deny it, the food here is amazing! I get excited to eat lunch and dinner...is that weird? I guess you'd know what I mean if you've ever gone to Italy.

Because my host sister is the same age as me, she took me friends with her friends to a discoteca (which is what we would call a club). It was so much fun, and the next week my photo from the club was in the Mantova Newspaper!!! I was like "woah thats me!!".

On the first weekend I went on the Florence trip with the other exchange students. It was so good! After being homesick it definitely cheered me up and I got to talk to the other students about how I was feeling about everything. Florence is just so beautiful!

As for my Italian, its slowly improving I guess. I'm starting to say simple sentences and pick up a few words in sentences. It'll take time though.

Although I’ve had ups and downs about being homesick i’m really starting to enjoy myself. I think it's really important for me to enjoy myself, after all, I wanted to go on exchange! Time is seriously flying by, before I know it I’ll be back in Australia!

I'll be sure to keep you updated.

Ciao!!!
P.s - IT’S SO COLD!!
