In December 2010 Francessca from New Zealand was the winner of our Indigenous scholarship. She is currently on our Italy semester program. She writes:
My whole experience so far has been absolutely amazing! 10 out of 10. I could not have been more fortunate. The people I'm surrounded by at school, my friends, my host family and just in general the people of Turin are very inviting and warming.
As mentioned earlier my host family are amazing! I couldn't have asked for a better family to be placed with - they are very gentle, sympathetic, kind and more to me. Luckily the whole family speak english so I feel included when I don't understand what has been said in Italian and they explain to me in English. My host parents are doctors and so they have a very busy schedule however that does not affect our time together what so ever - they love the mountains so most weekends we go there. Laura and Stefano are my little sister and brother and it's great because they help me a lot with the language.
With Mondo Insieme I took part in a two week course which really helped a lot because I have not studied the language at all before I came. After that I studied by myself which wasn't all that effective - I did learn more words but it wasn't intense. I have now started attending free Italian lessons connected with my school which are great because I need to be pushed and I feel like when I go to these classes they are the right level of intensity that I need and I feel as though I have to try hard not only for me but for my teachers.
Dilva (local coordinator) has been amazing in terms of helping me at the start of my stay. Dilva has organised two pizza evenings with all the exchange students so far which have been good to catch up with other students. Dilva also invited me to speak at an exchange program presentation for Italians which I enjoyed very much and she gave me an opportunity to speak publicly in Italian. At the moment I do not have any contact with Dilva but that is because I do not have any problems and if I do need her help then she is a phone call away - however she is very busy because she is a teach r and a single mum and does this job as well so it is very hard to find a time to meet if I do want to see her.
